Mark Fischer

Nationality: Oneida
Mark Fischer is a sculptor and member of the Oneida Nation of Green Bay. He has been involved in Native American education at an administrative level for many years and was instrumental in establishing several Native American scholarships for Wisconsin colleges. Striving to share his cultural knowledge and educate teachers and students, he presents an assorted collection of his museum-quality Native American artifacts, challenging students to identify many items before explaining their true purpose, composition, cultural importance, and historical facts. Students will receive a close-up view of a variety of decorative, functional and ceremonial items.
Mark Fischer describes his art: Inspired by ancient Woodland petroglyphs and pictographs, our sculptures are created in copper, as were decorative and functional items from the Great Lakes area tribes. Representing dream and spirit figures, fertility symbols, clan and power symbols, each copper sculpture is welded in silver and then washed with a patina finish to bring out the beautiful natural aging process. It is then given an Oneida name and an Oneida (Iroquois) story, poem, prayer or cultural statement.
